If you are experiencing difficulty in sleeping or you are having disrupted sleep you may be suffering from insomnia. The first thing you need to work out is what might be causing the problem. By working out what causes insomnia in your case, you will have a better chance of dealing with it and getting a restful night’s sleep.

The following are some possible causes of insomnia:

Stress and anxiety is the number one cause of sleep related problems today. As many as 50% of Americans say they have had difficulty sleeping at one time or another due to stress or worry. Worrying about money, relationship problems, work or illness can all contribute to lack of quality sleep. Dealing with the stress may help, but not always. Sometimes insomnia continues to occur even when the stress is resolved.

Mental health problems can also contribute to insomnia. Mood disorders such as bipolar disorder or depression is a potential cause. Studies have shown that as many as 90% of people with depression also suffer from sleep related problems. Anxiety disorders and psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia can also be a cause.

Physical conditions such as chronic pain, hormone problems, joint problems (e.g. arthritis), heart disease, neurological disorders, sleep disorders and respiratory problems can keep people awake at night.

Certain medications can cause insomnia - anti-depressants, beta blockers, stimulant drugs, epilepsy medication, hormone replacement therapy and some of the medications for asthma are just a few.

Lastly, drug and substance misuse can be what causes insomnia. Smoking, drinking too much alcohol, drug misuse, and even drinking too much caffeine (coffee, tea, cola etc.) can all cause sleep problems. If you want to drink coffee, make sure you don’t do it late in the evening as it will most likely keep you awake.
